Cultural heritage and arts at iconic Frederiksborg Castle

Looking for cultural heritage? Frederiksborg sums the glory of past centuries’ architectural glory. Wander magnificent halls while exploring the Danish National Portrait gallery and museum of National History. We’ tell the story through arts.

Welcome to Frederiksborg. In the King’s Wing and Princess’s Wing, you will find our permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Church Wing is home to the Castle Church and the Great Hall, featuring a gallery of royal and princely portraits and magnificent tapestries stretching from floor to ceiling.

Our setting, Frederiksborg Castle, was once a national symbol. After serving for centuries as a hunting lodge and magnificent royal residence for Danish kings, it was rebuilt as a museum.

Don't miss!

Part of the Permanent Collection

The National Portraitgallery

The portrait collection begins in the Audience Chamber with the first kings of the House of Oldenburg. From there, it continues through the permanent exhibitions, featuring everything from powerful women of the 16th century to the latest portraits of scientists and King Frederik X.

Create a grand pictorial account of Danish history to restore national pride following that difficult 19th century! Our founder filled our galleries with history paintings featuring the history of Denmark through the lens of 19th-century.

Explore the history paintings

The permanent collection is filled with narrative history paintings. They primarily date from the period 1660–1800. The period 1800–1900 features more battle scenes and smaller landscape paintings. The paintings have played a significant role in shaping the national understanding of Danish history.

Museets historie

Fællesskabsfølelse. National identitet. Et monument over Danmarks historie.
