Directions & parking

By car

Free parking

Free parking: If you fancy a scenic walk!

From the parking lot at Rendelæggerbakken 6 (opens in new tab) (locally called Tromlepladsen), you can walk through the Baroque Garden (Barokhaven) to Frederiksborg Castle—or between the Baroque Garden and the Landscape Garden with views of the Bathhouse Castle. You’ll walk about one kilometer but enjoy one of the most impressive arrivals to Frederiksborg. And best of all: no payment needed. There is one large parking lot and two small ones in the area.

Alternatively, you can park at Batzkes Bakke (opens in new tab). From there, you walk along Castle Lake or through the lower part of the Baroque Garden to the castle.

Paid parking

Want to pay to park, but be as close as possible?
You can park at the parking lot on Møntportvejen (opens in new tab), about 300 m from the castle and museum. Note that the museum does not own this parking lot; please contact APCOA regarding parking, payment and parking charge notices.

Electric cars and charging

There are 6 charging stations at the parking lot on Møntportvejen.

Motorhome (RV) parking

We recommend parking in one of the two designated motorhome areas at Rendelæggerbakken 6 (opens in new tab). They offer unlimited parking and a fuel station with provisions right next door. You can easily continue on the major highways around Hillerød. See the parking area in the Park4Night (opens in new tab) app. Park4Night also indicates a smaller parking area right next to it.

From these parking spots, you step directly into the Castle Garden.

You can also check availability at the popular Hillerød Camping (opens in new tab).

Buses (tourist coaches)

Short-term parking (drop-off/pick-up): At the entrance to Frederiksborg via Møntportvejen (opens in new tab), there are drop-off and pick-up spaces for buses. After drop-off, buses can park on Roskildevej (opens in new tab), where there are parking spaces specifically for this purpose! This parking option is recommended for shorter visits to Frederiksborg.
Dear driver: Please love your fellow driver and make room for drop-off and loading. It takes about 5 minutes to drive out to Roskildevej (opens in new tab) (approx. 2 km).

Long-term parking: Buses can also use the three purpose-built tourist coach parking spaces at Rendelæggerbakken (opens in new tab) (Tromlepladsen) behind the Baroque Garden. From there, visitors can walk through the Baroque Garden down to the castle. The walk is about one kilometer with an impressive view over the gardens and the castle. This parking option is recommended for buses with a tour guide. There is easy access to the main roads towards Fredensborg, Kronborg, and Louisiana.

3-hour bus parking: There are two spaces for 3-hour bus parking: one at the entrance by Møntportvejen at Frederiksværksgade (opens in new tab) (currently not available due to road work) and one on Markedsstræde (opens in new tab). As these are limited, we recommend the other options.

By public transit

Train

You can easily get to Frederiksborg by train (opens in new tab)! The S-train runs directly to Hillerød Station from central stations in Copenhagen. Plan your journey here (opens in new tab).

From the station, there are two obvious walking or cycling routes to Frederiksborg:

  • Walk along the path by Castle Lake (Slotssøen) and enjoy the beautiful North Zealand nature.
  • Walk along Slotsgade and experience Hillerød’s vibrant main street with cozy cafés and shops.

It takes about 15 minutes to walk to Frederiksborg (without stops).

See the routes here (opens in new tab).

Bus from Hillerød Station

Arrived by train and want to take the bus By bus from Hillerød Station to the castle and museum?

Jump on bus 301 or 302 from Hillerød Station and jump off a stone’s throw from the castle and museum.
Whether you arrive by long-distance bus to Hillerød Station or want to switch from train to bus, you can find your journey on Rejseplanen (opens in new tab).
